Today I wanted to share with you the plans we have for creating a top down small RPG video game using Unity !
BlackthornProd has teamed up with two other “we hope” passionate digital artists and programmers and we hope to achieve a fun and stylized little video game !
For this first game we are going to chose 2D pixelized graphics to try and reduce difficulties, we will be using GIMP, Photoshop and of course the amazing game engine Unity !
This game will be set in a small, spooky little dungeon. We are looking for a kind of fantasy environment with monsters, dragons, traps and more !
Of course, we are still in the very early stages of developing this game, many things are still undecided like the name of our game, the kind of monsters, music and tons more. BlackthornProd will also be working on a cool “poster / cinematic” to present the game, with awesome 3D characters and animation !
Down below are a few early sketches of our heroes and monsters, many things have to be changed but right now we are just trying to get down the main idea. Each hero and monster character will have a couple of animations like idle, run, attack and a special attack.
Finally, just to tell you that if you are interested in joining the team you are always welcome, there is always need of extra passionate digital artists, animators and game developers’s !
I am so excited today to tell you about this amazing game development software I have just discovered ! It’s name is Construct 2 and it is the perfect tool to use if you are a beginner that has little or no experience at all in game dev ! With this software you can quickly create fun and awesome games in very little time, no coding or programming language required ! Don’t think this software is a piece of joke because it really isn’t, you can create seriously cool stuff !
So if you want to start creating video games, jump in right now !
BlackthornProd is going to start of using Construct 2 to create small and fun video games and then later on, once we feel we have mastered this software we will get into UNITYwhich is much more complex and bigger game engine ! 🙂
Hi guys hope you are all doing well, today I wanted to talk to you about the different projects that are going on inside BlackthornProd !
First of all and I am very exited to introduce you to “The dangerous toy” project. It’s the story of a ball that is going to bounce on a small colourful box, the box is going to open and a strange toy clown is going to pop out laden with fancy, pretty, deadly little props. After the contents of the box have spilled out and unsquashed the little clown will explode ( a challenging training in dynamics for BlackthornProd ). For this project we want a cartoony feeling,this toy clown has to look innocent, flashy, NOT dangerous, even the bomb that he is holding and the rockets he has strapped to his back have to look “toy like”, plasticky, unreal. And yet very soon everybody will realize that this “toy” is in fact a deadly bomb ready to blow up, before it explode’s in a thousand pieces though we want to give some tension, there has to be a sort of strained feeling, like the smiley ballon that come’s out of the box might go POP, the ball that triggered the box to open will slowly roll on the ground, the clown will creak slightly on his spring, going back and forth, back and forth, nice and slowly… That’s when everybody start’s realizing that something is wrong, that something is not quite right around here.

In this post I wanted to show you a Nabolos, a squat little alien creature that populates the world of Nabulu .
This particular Nabolos will be the main character of our World of Nabulu project. The modelling and rigging was done in Autodesk Maya and the texturing was done in Mudbox.
We wanted to give our alien a wet skin texture, a bit like a snail or a slug, to do that we created a specular paint layer, took a stamp and painted over the head and hands.
We also created a complete facial rig for this character so he can smile, look sad, angry, cruel, crazy…
The next big challenge for our project is too duplicate this Nabolos character and make different variations of him so we can then make our Nabolos town look more lively and real.

Hello everyone and welcome back yet again on BlackthornProd ! 🙂
Today I want to share with you BIG news, now that Halloween is over and our (Halloween projects) our completed BlackthornProd has planned out a massive new project called “The Nabulu World”. In this project we are going to create a small world from scratch starting by a “zoomed out version of the world” and going on to create a small town; the Nabolos which are squat little alien creatures that populate the Nabulu World as well as their different cool space ships !! As you see there is a lot of work to do but it is going to be extremly fun ! This is going to be BlackthornProd’s second “official” animated movie and of course, we want our animation to be better than last time, our characters more fun and exiting and the story more interesting ! This project has a lot of challenging aspects to it that we definitly think will help BlackthornProd to progress in many different ways so if you are interested in seeing how the Nabulu World project is going to progress I urge you to stay tuned on BlackthornProd ! 🙂

Happy Halloween everybody and welcome back on BlackthornProd !
It has been 4 months since BlackthornProd started out its wonderful journey into graphical art and we love it more and more everyday ! We have created 8 characters in all, from a funny alien to a crazy little pumpkin man and we are having an enormous amount of fun imagining funnier and more spectacular projects everyday ! We feel we have progressed a lot during these four months but we still need to become a thousand times better before we become true geniuses of the CG world ! We have a lot of ideas, and I mean a LOT of them for the next months to come so stay tuned on BlackthornProd because are journey has only just begun !

With Halloween coming up in only two days, lots of cool things are coming up on BlackthornProd, first of all, tomorow Friday 30th of October, I am going to create a tutorial on my YOUTUBE chanel on how to create a cool, cartoony Halloween JackOLantern !
Secondly, my 2nd animated movie “Sweat Pumpkin” is almost completed, the project was fun to make and the final result is pretty good for beginners like us. We still have to practise a lot in animation before we are able to produce amazing movies like Disney’s Frozen, Dreamworks How to train your dragon or even Pixar’s Inside Out, but we will one day reach that amazing level !!
To finsh up this post, we are happy to show you our newest character : Burny the Dragon ! This guy wasn’t made for animation purpose but to really practise painting, modelling and sculpting ! We really wanted to dig further inside of the amazing Autodesk 3D application : Mudbox. The Logo you can see on the dragon’s armor was made using Gimp, an awseome FREE replacement to Photoshop !
Pumpkin Dash, our first 3D video game is in process ! After having created the assets and imported them into Unity we have now been busy on importing animation, learning about components, scripting and the like ! We quickly noticed that Unity is a no joke piece of software and that it is going to take a lot of time, practice and patience before we handle this amazing game develoment application ! For now our pumpkin Man character can run around the maze and pick up energy balls, we still have to fix a lot of little bugs, put in place a time trial script and insert some cool halloween audio ! 😈
It has been almost four months since BlackthornProd started out its epic, fun and wonderful journey into game development, 3D animation and webDev ! We thought it was due time to design a Logo that would represent us in the world. We took about an hour designing tons of different logos and in the end 4 of them stood out from the rest. Here are our 4 favorite logo designs that were created using GIMP ( without Wacom Tablet ). Click on the image to get a better view of the logos ! 🙂
We wanted to show you the cool assets we have created for BlackthornProd’s very first video game : Pumpkin Dash !! We used Autodesk Maya and Mudbox and we are now going to use Unity to assemble all these cool models ! First we have the walls ( simple black stone with some cracks ), we will use these assets to assemble our Maze ! Next we have a strange lopsided human skull and a grinning Jack O Lantern, these cool little props will be placed on the Maze floor to give an extra spooky little Halloween feeling to our game ! And of course we have our character, the Pumpkin Man, up and ready for take off !! We will of course create some stones and rubble to give a more believable feeling to the Maze !
