New Resolutions

Hi guys and welcome back to BlackthornProd !

BlackthornProd has many ambitions, a huge amount of plans for the futur, I want to acheive everything, from building amazing games to lauch on the app store, creating my very own Udemy course to making super fun movies filled with characters and worlds that were born from the very fruit of my imagination !

Here are the two main plans BlackthornProd has for the near futur :

First of all, i need to learn much MUCH more about animation in Maya. Animation is very hard, when I started out doing 3D animation with my brother Liam in the Summer 2015 we thought we could make long 3D animated movies with multiple characters, huge environments, complex scenes with fights, explosions, adventure… That is the reason why every single one of our mini animated movies were a bit of a flop. True the characters were quite cool and interesting, we always took a very long time modelling them, painting, setting up their control rigs but when it came down to animation we did it so fast, in a matter of 2-3 days we tried making extremly complex animation and then, realizing that what we were doing looked crap, we rushed the animation even more just to get it over and done with and so we could say : “We finished the movie !!”. Also, every one of our mini animations had no story, there was no storyline, we always jumped into a project with a very quick little idea, very primitive which made the movie boring !  So the fact that we had no story, that we tried projects that were to complex for our beginner level and that we rushed the animation part of the pipeline has done that we have now ended up with 4-5 short, very mediocre animated movies ! We didn’t take enough time on our work, we quickly got fed up of the project and wanted to start of with a brand new one and that is quite normal, the digital world is so exciting, there are so many possibilities, so many things we can make up and do ! But now we figured it is time to change the way we do things, BlackthornProd has took a large step back, we are going to watch many tutorials on Autodesk Maya, from learning how to better texture our worlds to making simple but really GREAT animation ! For now we are going to do a lot of learning but we can guarantee that the next mini 3D animated movie of BlackthornProd will not be another on of those ” ” relatively good ” short films with ” coolish ” characters but a crappy story and even worse animation, nop, the next animated short will be BlackthornProd’s first OFFICIAL 3D animation movie, it will be small, simple, but the content will be first class quality !

BlackthornProd’s second project for the near futur is also about a lot of learning. Above I mentionned that I wanted to make amazing video games that thousands of people will play around the world but for that to happen I am going to need to get through the painful and very complex task of learning how to programm in C#. Programming, for me anyway is extremly hard, you need to be really focused and not give up because once you get over the technical side, once you have a solid foundation  and know how to programm, you can start making any video you ever dreamed of ! That is why I am working hard and digging my brain to learn about programming and Unity software, because I want to get to the point where I can create my very own video games filled with my worlds, characters and stories, and for me, that is a dream come true !

For now I have created 2 mini video games, Dungeon Breaker and Hero’s Destination, ceating them was challenging but seeing my games come to life like that has made me hungry for MUCH more, so here I go, lots of learning to be done and I can promise you that one of these days I will launch my very own video game on the app store and share it with the entire world !!

Hero’s Destination !

Hi everyone and welcome back to BlackthornProd !

We have been very busy for a while developing our first video game, Hero’s Destination, a fast paced game where you play the role of a small wizard trying to make his way throught a dungeon level surrounded by traps and monsters ! Of course to make the game a little more exciting we added a time limit, if you don’t reach your destination in time (a glowing chest), you lose ! You can also die by falling down to 0 health !

This video game was created using Unity but we are far from finished, a lot of things need to change to make the game really fun to play (like the graphics, levels, difficulty and much MUCH more) ! But we are really happy with the progress we are making, we have learned a great deal about C# and Unity and we are more motivated than ever to make wounderful games and graphics !

Dungeon Breaker : BlackthornProd’s first 2D video game

Hi everyone and welcome back to BlackthornProd !!

It has been some time since our last post, about 12 days I think because we have been going through what I like to call a learning phase. We are currently following an awesome course on UDEMY that is teaching us how to use the amazing game development software, UNITY 3D as well as how to programm in C# !

For now we have just created a simple text adventure game and a simple 2D game called Block Breaker that I after made my own version of called Dungeon Breaker !! Theses games are very simple but they have taught us a great deal about the basics of how to create video games, we are currently working on our third mini video game following this course called Lazer Defenser, a new version of Space Invader, with this game we will learn how to make ennemies, animation, health, score points and much more  !! So you all just wait and see, BlackthornProd is going to be creating games that get better and better !!

Finally, just to tell you that our World of Blackthorn movie number 1 is being worked on, we are currently creating on paper a detailed story board of the characters, environment and storyline, very soon we will finally start modelling our main character, a young ghost hunter named Howard Curdle, that is going to try and prove his worth by entering a mysterious cave…

BlackthornProd’s dive into Unity !

 

Hi guys !

BlackthornProd is so exited to have finnaly started learning how to use the amazing game engine Unity and how to programme in the powerful language c# ! We have took an amazing course on Udemy that is going to bring us through the process of creating about eight awseome video games, from a simple text adventure to a crazy fps survival game !

Of course BlackthornProd will soon inform you on the ideas we have for creating our own games and I can tell you one thing, we have plenty of amazing ideas !

BlackthornProd’s Pixel RPG

Hi guys and merry Christmas !

Today I wanted to share with you the plans we have for creating a top down small RPG video game using Unity !

BlackthornProd has teamed up with two other “we hope” passionate digital artists and programmers and we hope to achieve a fun and stylized little video game !

For this first game we are going to chose 2D pixelized graphics to try and reduce difficulties, we will be using GIMP, Photoshop and of course the amazing game engine Unity !

This game will be set in a small, spooky little dungeon. We are looking for a kind of fantasy environment with monsters, dragons, traps and more !

Of course, we are still in the very early stages of developing this game, many things are still undecided like the name of our game, the kind of monsters, music and tons more. BlackthornProd will also be working on a cool “poster / cinematic” to present the game, with awesome 3D characters and animation !

Down below are a few early sketches of our heroes and monsters, many things have to be changed but right now we are just trying to get down the main idea. Each hero and monster character will have a couple of animations like idle, run, attack and a special attack.

Finally, just to tell you that if you are interested in joining the team you are always welcome, there is always need of extra passionate digital artists, animators and game developers’s  !

Alien Destruction : BlackthornProd’s first video game !

Welcome everybody !

It’s finally the Christmas  holidays, we can finally get cracking on serious stuff !

We are delighted to tell you we have created our first 2D video game, Alien Destruction  !  This is the first version of the game, we really wanted to just play around, have fun and learn more about Construct 2, very soon we will send you the link to the final version of Alien Destruction which will have MUCH better graphics, game mechanics and more !  To play our test version of Alien Destruction, click on the link above !

What’s more, BlackthornProd is planning to create a small fantasy RPG video game with 5 other people, we will keep you informed on how the game is coming along and don’t hesitate to contact us if you interested in working with us on our projects via our gmail acount : blackthornprod@gmail.com !

Finally, as Christmas is only one week away we are going to seriously going to get cracking on our Christmas scene which is going to feature a snowy field covered with Xmax trees. Presents will be scattered underneath the tree and littTestAlienDestruction.pngle white rabbits will be hanging around, looking at the moon or nibbling some candy ! This scene will also have a looping animation, with snow falling in the background and lights going on and off !

 

Construct 2 : an amazing software to start becoming a game developer !

Hi guys and welcome !

I am so excited today to tell you about this amazing game development software I have just discovered ! It’s name is Construct 2 and it is the perfect tool to use if you are a beginner that has little or no experience at all in game dev ! With this software you can quickly create fun and awesome games in very little time, no coding or programming language required ! Don’t think this software is a piece of joke because it really isn’t, you can create seriously cool stuff !

So if you want to start creating video games, jump in right now !

BlackthornProd is going to start of using Construct 2 to create small and fun video games and then later on, once we feel we have mastered this software we will get into UNITY which is much more complex and bigger game engine ! 🙂Logo01

Pumpkin Dash : energy balls !

Pumpkin Dash, our first 3D video game is in process ! After having created the assets and imported them into Unity we have now been busy on importing animation, learning about components, scripting and the like ! We quickly noticed that Unity is a no joke piece of software and that it is going to take a lot of time, practice and patience before we handle this amazing game develoment application ! For now our pumpkin Man character can run around the maze and pick up energy balls, we still have to fix a lot of little bugs, put in place a time trial script and insert some cool halloween audio ! 😈

Pumpkin Dash : Assets !

We wanted to show you the cool assets we have created for BlackthornProd’s very first video game : Pumpkin Dash !! We used Autodesk Maya and Mudbox and we are now going to use Unity to assemble all these cool models ! First we have the walls ( simple black stone with some cracks ), we will use these assets to assemble our Maze ! Next we have a strange lopsided human skull and a grinning Jack O Lantern, these cool little props will be placed on the Maze floor to give an extra spooky little Halloween feeling to our game ! And of course we have our character, the Pumpkin Man, up and ready for take off !! We will of course create some stones and rubble to give a more believable feeling to the Maze !
